The world of international development has long depended on corporate philanthropy to thrive. Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have benefitted from the increasing globalization of corporate entities, and studies have found that international companies are far more likely to invest their philanthropic efforts into development endeavors. While many of these companies were more likely than not to give to U.S.-based nonprofit organizations, the recent increase in giving among corporations has been incredibly useful given the recession. Trends suggest that as companies increase their overseas operations and hire more foreign employees, international development has become an important part of these companies’ mission.
Corporate-NGO partnerships are fueling an increasingly large effort to increase development around the world, investing more than $8 billion in 2010 alone. Given the ever-decreasing funds given from public sources to development-focused NGOs, many of these charities have turned to corporate partnerships in order to continue their mission. Corporations, in contrast, seem largely motivated to further their own philanthropic and business goals through corporate giving, seeking partners that will enable them to make an impact in the countries where their interests lie. Given the complexity of the many issues facing the world, the increasing rate of private-nonprofit partnership formation serves as an important part of the global philanthropy gestalt.
